  1. Anticipatory Set:

Play a version of the song, "Are You Sleeping." Tell them you are going to teach them another silly song, sung to this tune, and learn the meanings of some big words.

  2. Review the definition of philanthropist: "someone who gives their time, talent and treasure for another or for the common good." Break down the definition into parts, and ask children to give examples of all of the following words:

  3. time: (before school, recess, lunch time, 3:00)

talent: (reading, singing, playing soccer, painting)

treasure: (money, candy, special book, special toy, any item you value)

common good: (something that is good for everyone - this means all of us)

  4. Introduce the song, What is a Philanthropist?  It sounds like the song, Are You Sleeping? but it has different words. Children follow along as the leader tracks the print. In the second reading, stop at the words time, talent and treasure to review the meanings of the words. Sing the song through several times to develop fluency.

Assessment:

Children may illustrate an example of philanthropy in their journals. Depending on ability, have them write or dictate a sentence or label for their picture.
