  1. Anticipatory Set

Draw a big heart on a chart paper. Draw a zig-zag line down the center, like a broken hear. Ask the young people to brainstorm things or places they love about the environment, nature, and outdoor activities. Write keywords from their brainstorming on the left half of the heart.

  2. Then, on the right half of the heart, write things that break their hearts related to the items on the left. For example, it might break their heart that the local beach has become polluted or that the bee population is down.

  3. From this, discuss how people and practices are hurting the environment, just like their (lesson one) discussion about how pavement interrupts natural processes.

Around the outside of the heart, write small actions they can take in response to the things that break their hearts.

  4. Introduce the term environmental stewardship and have the learners share what they know or think they know about the meaning of these words. Share the definition of environmental stewardship: "the careful and responsible management of the Earth’s natural resources.”

  5. Discuss:

    • Who has been entrusted with the care of the Earth’s natural resources? Is it the government’s responsibility, the individual’s, business, environmental organizations, or all?
    • What actions can we take as environmental stewards?
