Video Clip and Discussion Guide: This two-minute video clip shares the stories of giving blood as an act of philanthropy. Why do people give blood, and how does it impact society?

Anticpatory Set

Do you know someone who was in the hospital and needed blood? Have you ever wondered where hospitals get blood that saves lives? It comes from donations, and that is a form of philanthropy. This quote from Barbara Bush illustrates the broad actions that are philanthropic. “Some people give time, some money, some their skills and connections, some literally give their life's blood. But everyone has something to give.”

  1. Why do you think people keep coming back to give blood?
  2. What do you think about giving blood yourself?
  3. Who do you think the men in this clip might have impacted by their donations? How do they feel about it?
  4. Philanthropy is "giving time, talent, or treasure for the sake of another." Do you think giving blood is an example of time, talent, or treasure? Explain your thinking.
