Unit: Impact of Giving
In this one period lesson, learners discuss hunger and learn about nonprofits in the community. Students respond to literature and reflect on ways people give and take action. As a service project, they raise awareness of the issue or of giving opportunities.
Unit: Action through Art
The learners read stories written and illustrated by teens about action and advocacy to make the world a better place. The students brainstorm concerns/issues they have about their school or local community and create story outlines about ways to address an issue.
Learners explore what it means to demonstrate civic virtues of justice, kindness, peace, and tolerance as responsible citizens. The students write a goal to practice one of the virtues.
This lesson focuses on the language of human rights. Learners examine the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and analyze the rights from a personal perspective. They discuss how well they perceive that the rights are enforced.
Through pictures, provocative questions, group discussion, and video, students explore what a refugee is, what his or her life is like, and how people can help them feel welcome and get the tools they need to survive in a new home.
Students learn about the philanthropy of historical figures. Students explore how their lives have been influenced by past philanthropic acts and decide how they can benefit others.
