Unit: Pollution Solutions
Learners recognize water as a scarce natural resource that is often polluted and made unusable. They research local water sources, describe issues that pollute water, and brainstorm solutions.
In this lesson, the students experience unequal treatment first hand and discuss fairness. Children reflect on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream. Through this activity, the students personalize a way to act out his dream.
Students learn about the characteristics of an effective personal narrative and compare those to a news article. They do prewriting activities and practice writing details to show rather than tell about an experience.
Students view a video about a girl named Carly who is forced to leave her home. They define the term refugee and discuss the problems Carly faces in her travels to find a safe place to live. The students examine the reasons refugees must leave their homes.
Using the example of Benjamin Franklin’s philanthropy, learners will research the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and analyze why their work cannot wholly be replicated by government.
This lesson introduces the learner to some of the resources--individual, organizational (for profit and non profit), and governmental-- available to provide forewarning/alert, preparedness programs, as well as relief during and in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Students will describe how Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat was a continuation of long-standing acts of protest against forced segregation in public spaces in the South. They will explain how her action, which ushered change in public transportation, was heroic.
