Unit: Poetry of Giving (The)
Students research what nonprofit organizations are in their regional community and study their purpose and what is in their annual reports. They clarify the differences between a nonprofit and for-profit organization.
Unit: Concepts of Leadership
To enable students to describe the social and economic consequences of overpopulation as well as philosophical issues that affect government policies and decision-making about economic issues.

Students will give examples of philanthropy as they relate to public libraries. The lesson also will demonstrate the importance of books in a democratic society.
Learners will recognize the structural characteristics of bulbs, corms and rhizomes. They will describe acts of philanthropy and analyze why people give to others of their time, talent and treasure.
Learners will develop a working knowledge of the vocabulary associated with philanthropy and awareness of the rich history of philanthropy in the United States.
Students learn about the characteristics of an effective personal narrative and compare those to a news article. They do prewriting activities and practice writing details to show rather than tell about an experience.
