Students will learn about the work of a specific nonprofit organization through a series of interviews and by doing volunteer work for the organization.
The purpose of this lesson is to assist students in identifying the different sectors in our society and the role each plays.
In this lesson, students recognize that our valuable natural resources are maintained and cared for by government, business, nonprofits, and individuals. The three sectors (and individuals) work together to accomplish what any one of them cannot do alone.
Students research and report back to the class about the nonprofit organizations that are serving their community and the many facets of community life that nonprofits are involved in.

Unit: Living In a Community
Students learn that the community has four sectors: business, government, nonprofit and family. The students take a walk through a central business district in their local community and identify which sector funds or is represented by different buildings, business, parks and so on.
Students will recognize different job opportunities available in the nonprofit sector and identify people in the community who have positions in nonprofit organizations.
