Unit: Community Philanthropy
Participants gain awareness about the work of local nonprofit organizations through research and by interviewing representatives. They summarize the mission, needs, and impact of the organizations on the community.
This lesson guides learners as they inform a public audience about philanthropic acts that enhance the common good. The learners write newspaper articles that describe their own acts of service and volunteerism or those of other individuals or groups in their community.
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the Social Action Project.
The students will write a business letter to the service professional organization they have chosen requesting information about the organization and its cause. This information will be the foundation for the research paper each student will write.
Learners will analyze the “new philanthropists,” who they are, what they give, to whom they give, their personal qualities, and how they hold people and organizations accountable for their philanthropic efforts. They will consider different causes and issues which they might support.
