Students will begin to ponder the essential questions regarding philanthropy, which they will consider throughout the unit. They will formulate answers, and be familiar with the terms associated with philanthropy and democracy.
The learners will identify and describe many different characteristics of civic virtue using material from a variety of sources and then select the characteristics they believe are most important.
Students will be able to identify a basic textbook definition of good citizenship, including the classic Roman concept of civic virtue (putting the common good above individual need).
Through an introductory pre-test, the learners will establish their prior knowledge of key terms and concepts important to creating and sustaining a democratic society. The learners then will expand this knowledge and understanding through guided reading and presentations.
