Read 'n' Give -- Planning Our Book Drive

The purpose of this lesson is for students to plan and carry out a book drive to benefit children in their community who may not have access to many books at home.

Home Connection 

Students work with their families to determine which gently used books they will donate. They may discuss which books make good choices for this project and why.

  1. Anticipatory Set:

    Review the discussion from the previous lesson (why reading is important for everyone, how they feel about children not having books, and what they decided to do about it).Tell the students that a service event is a project planned and carried out in order to share time, talent, or treasure with others to address a need.In their last lesson, they identified a need (children who don't have books at home to help them learn to read), and in this lesson they will plan a service project to address that need.

  2. Tell the students that they are going to work together to plan the details of a book drive that collects and distributes books to children in the community.

  3. Project a copy of Handout One: Project Plan onto the board so all students can see it as you fill in the chart together. Or, copy the chart onto chart paper and use markers to fill in the plan.

  4. Through brainstorming, work together to make the plan:

    • What the needs are, or what needs they hope to address through the project.
    • How this need can be addressed.
    • What action they will take – how they want to collect books, who should participate (just the class, the whole school, the community), where the donations will go, and what organizations or other schools they can partner with. (See Extensions below for details about community partnerships.)
    • How they will know they made a difference.
    • How they will celebrate the good that they have done!
  5. At the completion of the planning, students may make posters or signs to spread awareness about the event.

  6. Begin the book drive and carry out the plans according to the timeline they established.
