Anticipatory Set:
Review the meaning of the terms "nonprofit sector" and "for-profit sector." Identify some organizations that work for the common good.
- Divide the group into five working groups. Assign these five time periods to the groups: 1800-1840, 1841-1880, 1881-1920, 1921-1960, 1961-present.
- Each group creates a timeline of philanthropic events or actions in their time period. The facts may come from the handout or the Learning to Give Philanthropy Timeline.
- Display the timelines in order, and have representatives from each group teach the others about how philanthropy made change in their time period.
