Students connect the concepts/practices of fairness, justice, tolerance, togetherness, and equality to the advancement of human and civil rights. Students share ideas about how they can promote the common good and lead positive social changes.
In this lesson the learners will explore food scarcity and abundance as they relate to issues of poverty, wealth and health. They will identity a need in their community and explore ways that they might help reduce poverty, hunger, and ill-health there.
Raise learner's awareness and understanding of "homelessness" and difficulties people experience with poverty. The learners discuss the benefits of giving to others and reflect on ways they might address the needs of people living in poverty in their community.
Raise awareness of the importance of freedom of speech and the opportunity to voice one's opinion without fear of reprisal, as principles basic to a democracy. The learners investigate ways to have a positive influence in encouraging eligible voters to make their voices heard at the polls during elections.
Students describe the characteristics of someone who helps their community and relate those qualities to the definition of philanthropy. They research individuals or organizations in their community who do voluntary or philanthropic work and send them thank-you letters or invitations to a celebration designed to honor their philanthropic achievements.
Students gain awareness of the work of nonprofits and how they form to address issues that impact the common good. They learn more about one nonprofit and plan voluntary action to support its work through volunteering, donations, or advocacy.
Raise students' awareness of the issue of homelessness in the community and world. With a better understanding of their community's needs, students will be able to more effectively and efficiently determine their role in addressing community needs.
In this lesson the learners will identify state and national laws that provide for the humane treatment of animals. They will share their findings concerning the laws that regulate the use and treatment of animals and grow in their understanding of and appreciation for the role of advocacy in promoting change. They will write essays or letters advocating for animal welfare.
The purpose of this lesson is to expose the learners to beliefs and attitudes about the treatment of animals, especially applied to sports and entertainment. In this lesson the learners will understand how laws, and attitudes and beliefs concerning animal welfare, affect personal responses to animal treatment. They will determine how these laws, attitudes and beliefs affect the manner in which performing animals are trained and treated.
