This lesson is designed to teach children about living things, such as trees and the different types of plants. This will not only help them understand science benchmarks, but will also help them understand more about their service learning project.

Students are introduced to the origin and purpose of Kwanzaa and make a kinara, or candle holder, to use for the rest of the unit as they learn about the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

Students prove that they are not too young to volunteer services that help others. They brainstorm ways they can be of service at school and home. Students identify times they do not need to ask permission to act philanthropically.
