Unit: Soup's On! Caring For Others in Our Community
The purpose of this lesson is to recognize idioms and discuss their meanings. Students will identify the idioms in the book Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen. Students also examine idioms for hurtful language and modify idioms to reflect a philanthropic heart.
Students work cooperatively to cook large quanities of soup. They will use math skills to calculate and measure the amount of ingredients that go into recipes for a large group.
The students volunteer their time at a local soup kitchen. Before the visit, the students gain sensitivity to the people who visit the soup kitchen through discussion and role-playing. After the visit, the students reflect on the experience through writing.
The students use clay to create functional forms for everyday use. They plan a fundraiser at which they sell their pottery. The money raised is donated to the soup kitchen they visited earlier in the unit....

Unit: Generosity of Spirit Folktales
All cultures have rules regarding hospitality. In many folktales travelers and those without shelter and food place demands on others for assistance. They sometimes test the limits of hospitality. Learners will define hospitality and discuss its requirements.
