Learners gain awareness that their active participation in community life (volunteering, elections, advocacy) makes their community and government stronger. They analyze through fables how characters reveal their values through their actions.
Through the use of a fable, learners will understand that the giving of their time, talent and treasure will improve the quality of life in their communities.
Learners will identify the ways citizens can become active participants in the community through political parties, interest groups, voting and providing public service. This lesson may include determination of need in the community and response.
Learners will use economic thinking to determine how to allocate their scarce resources for community service.
In this lesson learners will become familiar with nonprofits. Learners will prepare for a volunteer experience in the nonprofit sector.
