We explore the difference volunteers make in our world. Youth recognize that even they can volunteer and make a difference in their community.

Young people listen to a story, summarize the main idea, and then act it out together. They identify the theme of community and describe the benefits of cooperation for the common good. 

The book The Empty Pot by Demi tells a fable of a Chinese emporer who wants to find the most worthy to take his place. What does it mean to be a worthy community leader? 

Youth will develop a collaborative definition of "community" and realize the unique attributes of their community.

Young people read about Jewish role models who partake in tikkun olam. They reflect on how they can use their behavior as a model for their own philanthropy to perfect the world.

Through a fable, learners discuss how generosity improves the quality of life in their communities.

A picture book biography tells the story of the life and philanthropy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

Reviewing current political cartoons related to justice, equity, and racism, learners identify how language and humor act as a form of social action. They create their own cartoons or statement promoting or showing the damage of one of these themes.

Children learn that the community has four sectors: business, government, nonprofit, and family. The children may walk through an area in their local community to identify which sector is represented by different places. As an alternative, they may look at a local map. 

We investigate and expand our understanding of caring and determine things or people we care about.
