This lesson explores the components of healthy living: eating healthy foods and exercise. Children identify their favorite healthy foods and forms of exercise that help them live a healthy life. Focus question: What foods and activity choices are important for healthy living?

Participants define what they want to accomplish for the community garden and identify a place that is available and has the right conditions. This requires research and permissions. 

Discuss when permission is needed in order to perform an act of philanthropy. Learn and practice a song about giving. 

To guide children to understand that being in a group requires working together, getting along, resolving conflicts, and having fun together.

Learners analyze the role of the four sectors of society in solving problems of hunger in the community.

We define community as "coming together with a common purpose" and brainstorm communities we are part of: classroom, sports team, interest and faith groups, and neighborhood.  We reflect on how philanthropy and trust affect the common good of the community.

The children recognize they form a community when they are brought together for a common purpose. They are encouraged to be philanthropic within interest groups, schools, and families to build trust and for the common good of the community.

We learn about the brave work of a Quaker, Laura Smith Haviland, who used her ties and talent to lead anti-slavery work before, during, and after the Civil War. 

Children learn about the issues of plastic in the ocean. They learn the effects of plastic garbage on the environment, including the lives of animals.

The learners identify a common area where trash accumulates and plan a clean-up project.
