Through this activity participants will become aware of their own feelings about others, and the racial, cultural and socio-economic biases in society today. Participants will analyze their own feelings in light of this awareness.
Students will learn about the work of a local nonprofit organization.
The purpose of this lesson is to have students develop appropriate interview questions, interview a philanthropic organization, and present information to the class. This lesson is a continuation from Lesson One: Characterizing Philanthropic People.
Students will respond to a literature book about family philanthropy. They will apply/compare their own philanthropic family acts to ideas for volunteering their time and talent to meet needs in the school or greater community.
Learners will recognize the structural characteristics of bulbs, corms and rhizomes. They will describe acts of philanthropy and analyze why people give to others of their time, talent and treasure.
This lesson focuses on motivations for giving. Learners explore the reasons why they might give treasure and what the impact of their giving might be upon the recipients of their giving.
Focus Question: How do our decisions about spending affect the common good?
Students will gain a basic understanding of philanthropic vocabulary and how they see it reflected in their lives and in their school and community.
