Participants will view a video about a girl named Carly who is a refugee forced to leave her home. They will discuss the problems Carly faces in her journey to find a safe place to live, draw inferences as to why Carly had to flee from her home, discuss in what ways the groups Carly met showed a lack of acceptance, and recall how Carly was treated by the groups she met while searching for safety.

Youth discuss and examine ways to influence healthy food choices related to their interests and understanding. They brainstorm service projects and use a decision-making model to choose a project. They implement their service project and reflect on their action.

Participants view pictures of families around the world with the food they eat in a week. Through awareness and discussion, they view cultural and regional differences. They discuss the health, cost, and distribution of food around the world.

We look at two examples of art connecting diverse people. The first example is a man who connects people around the world by dancing badly and capturing cultural expressions of dance and community. The second example is an artist who leaves free paintings around Boston (and then around the world) to encourage people to be kind to others. We discuss ways to pay forward kindness and connect diverse people through art.

Participants examine the meaning of and examples of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. They reflect on ways that stereotypes develop and have the potential to turn into discrimination.

Through an activity with differently wrapped gifts, youth examine the meaning of stereotypes and prejudice. They discuss the importance of respecting diverse voices to avoid stereotyping and prejudice.

Children interview and write a story about a person in their family or community. They share their stories to celebrate the unique differences in people in the community.
