The concepts of self-esteem, respect, philanthropy and community involvement are explored through song, science, books, art, and interaction with another "community." The book Buzzy the Bumblebee teaches about the value of a strong community.
The students respond to a picture book and apply the principles of believing in oneself and being kind to others to their own lives.
As students work as "insect investigators," they become more aware of their environment and become familiar with several insects and their unique characteristics. This activity is best used in spring or fall.
Students build a positive relationship with a group of people outside the classroom (retirement community, hospital, daycare facility, another classroom, etc.) through performance and discussion about "believing in yourself."
Students reflect on the importance of positive behaviors and actions to make a strong classroom community and through involvement in the larger community.
