This lesson will help students identify a person’s basic needs, realize that many people in the world are lacking these needs, and encourage them to think of ways to help these people.

Students evaluate their learning about philanthropy and the process of selecting a service-learning project. They write a guided reflection on their experience.  

Children learn that the community has four sectors: business, government, nonprofit, and family. The children may walk through an area in their local community to identify which sector is represented by different places. As an alternative, they may look at a local map. 

Young people identify examples of philanthropy in a classic piece of literature. Note: One handout has Biblical applications of the storyline.

The group reviews the list of issues and ways to take action, including those gathered with their families. They narrow the list through consensus. They invite a local Community Foundation Youth Advisory Committee member to talk about their work and grant process.

This lesson is a reflection on the beach clean-up experience. 

Using different approaches, the group develops a working understanding of the definition of philanthropy.
