This lesson introduces the Mayflower Compact. This brief agreement was the first document of its kind designed to bring a community together to focus on the common good. This may be a model for a classroom agreement written by the students.

Unit: How Did We Help?
This lesson will emphasiz the important characteristcs under which a nonprofit organization operates. It will provide a hands-on opportunity for the formation of youth clubs, i.e., Reading Buddies within the walls of the school.
To identify the qualities students see in effective leaders and create a life-size picture of a good leader emphasizing the body parts that represent those qualities.

Unit: Why Do People Give?
Through persuasive writing, the learners will build awareness and invite action for change in their school, the community or the world about an issue of concern. Typical forms may include essays, editorials, feature articles, or speeches.
This lesson will define and give examples of terms related to philanthropy and the common good. Learners will examine events that led to the development of philanthropic organizations prior to 1763.
Unit: Using and Abusing Credit
The learners will understand the ways in which money can be utilized: Spend, Save, Invest, and Donate, and come to an understanding of the importance of sound financial planning so as to avoid unnecessary short falls, huge debt, and bad credit ratings.
This lesson investigates and analyzes stereotyping in society and asks the learners to brainstorm ways that they can help diminish stereotyping in schools and communities.
Youth Activity: Participants will re-examine the definition of philanthropy and recognize philanthropic traits. They will begin to understand philanthropy and see themselves as philanthropists. Participants will begin to see themselves in a “new light” and reflect on how...
