The students gain a background understanding of Habitat for Humanity as both a global and local organization. As advocates, they raise awareness of the issue of poverty and affordable housing in their community.
Students explore the choices they have and the influences that make up their identity. They choose a method of presentation to share a representation of their identities and how their identities contribute to the common good.
In this three-day lesson, students analyze self-esteem in themselves and in fictional and nonfictional characters. They discuss the value of having a positive and realistic image of oneself and set goals for developing self-esteem in self and others by identifying strengths and personal talents/skills.
A positive school climate is made up of people making choices about how to act and treat one another. It is everyone's responsibility to be a good school citizen. Students identify what traits they value most and survey the school population to identify what is going well and what students feel needs improvement.
Using the data collected from the Blue Sky Activity in the previous lesson and the community interviews, students brainstorm possible members of the community who can help with the identified issues. Introduce students to the concept of neighborhood beautification.
Students learn a process for identifying the beautification needs of their neighborhood. Through vizualization and a neighborhood walk, students assess the specific needs of their neighborhood.
Learners define respect first without any input from the teacher or class discussion. Then as a group, they discuss the meaning of respect and differentiate it and contrast it with disrespectful behavior to self and others.
Participants gain exposure to how citizens organize in response to a need. They observe the benefits of group cooperation. They review data they have collected from surveys and work in collaborative groups to identify focus areas for the service-learning project.
Together we define philanthropy and identify health and safety issues we encounter in the community. The group creates a visual display showing issues of health and safety that are important to them.
Students conduct and evaluate their service project, then celebrate their success. After the service project, invite guests, volunteers, community members, and other students to celebrate with the class.
