Learners explore the definition of responsibility as "following tasks to completion." They analyze a scenario for the problem, consequences, and possible solutions. Learners connect completing tasks with maintaining trust.

The purpose of this lesson is to plan and carry out a service-learning project in which students give something that is needed or wanted by someone else without any expectation of receiving something in return. They use the South Asian Indian folktale "The Drum" as a model.


Students read and share information about service and volunteering in different cultures. They compare and contrast the work and mission of four famous philanthropists: Cesar Chavez, George Washington Carver, Sunderlal Buhuguna, and Abdul Sattar Edhi. They identify the motivations, impact, and attitudes about service, and start to clarify their personal attitudes about service through writing a personal mission statement.

In this lesson, students respond to the South Asian Indian folktale "The Drum" and explore the concept of capital as it applies to traditional economic systems and trade economies. Students contrast trade without money (bartering goods and services) to giving and volunteering. Students work in groups to create public service announcements that promote the use of non-monetary capital to address community and world problems.

Students use what they learned about composting to plan and develop a service plan that meets a need related to food waste and environmental stewardship. They reflect on the impact of their service and share that with peers and/or families.

The lesson introduces the concept of recycling food waste by composting. Students investigate food waste in their school and the nation, and gain awareness of recycling food waste as a better way to care for the earth. The class communicates in writing their plans for and results of a food-waste survey to the school population. 

In this the lesson the students learn basic facts about nutrition. They design "Stop Hunger Buckets" for the purpose of collecting coins to donate to a nonprofit organization. They create posters to inform other students about hunger and the fundraising campaign. The students write journal reflections.
