Students will gain an appreciation of poetry and learn poetic conventions. They will apply their knowledge of poetic conventions to poems they will write about philanthropy and themes related to philanthropy.

What are watersheds and why are they important? Students recognize that wise usage and protection of their local watershed is an example of environmental stewardship.
Raise awareness about the impact of growth (commercial and residential) on the environment, specifically, how impervious surfaces impact the environment.
Learners read about and discuss individuals who have made a difference. They review the definition of philanthropy and analyze the characteristics associated with philanthropic acts. They reflect on their own power and potential to make a difference.
This is a Project Based Learning (PBL) unit. The students individually identify a need in their community and research how a service-learning project could be beneficial.
Students will identify “senior citizens” in history who are considered heroes. They will compare/contrast these heroes with heroes in their own community and lives. Students will describe the work of foundations and report on the work of local foundations.
In this unit students will learn vocabulary and a brief history of philanthropy in the US. They demonstrate active citizen participation through service-learning related to core democratic values.
Students identify ways that artists are a valuable part of a community and to explore how they contribute to the public good.
