Nonprofit organizations contribute to the common good and social capital of the community by supporting the arts. Students role-play as members of the board of a philanthropic organization focused on the arts. They create a plan to bring the arts to the children of the community, enhancing the common good and building social capital.
Learners will research problems caused by a natural disaster and cite examples of aid provided in an effort to help those devastated populations. They will investigate the role of the four economic sectors in responding to the needs. They will participate in a collection campaign or other service project and learn about organizations to which they can contribute their philanthropy. Students carry out the project, track their results, advocate for the cause, and reflect on their participation.
The lesson's purpose is to research various African American inventors who have had a positive influence on society by contributing to the common good.

The learners will then provide a service to one a selected nonprofit organization.
The identification of the services provided by for-profit, nonprofit and governmental organizations and the drawing of community map that not only identifies the various services provided by these community organizations but also maps areas of need in the community form the intent of this lesson.
