Nonprofit Speakers

To introduce students to a variety of specific nonprofits and their representatives who address topics such as the organization's mission, financial support, and work.

Objectives 

Students will:

  • Name a variety of nonprofits in the six different categories
  • Read and comprehend 990 forms
  • Recognize and be able to discuss the variety of nonprofit organizations
  • Learn about volunteer opportunities and how to become involved in their community

 

Visits with these speakers allow students the opportunity to listen to the perspectives of nonprofit leaders and professionals from a diverse array of nonprofits and to hear the stories of these nonprofits. Examples of Atlanta organizations that have visited with the Philanthropy 101 class:

  • Atlanta Ballet
  • Boys & Girls Club
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation
  • Metropolitan Arts Council
  • Religion panel including speakers from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths
  • Teach for America
  • Theater in the Square
  • United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta
Materials 

Brochures and handouts from the nonprofit organizations visiting with the class.

Instructions

Print
  1. Lecture or presentation by a representative of a nonprofit organization, addressing topics such as the mission of the organization, sources of its financial support, and the work they are doing in the community. 

  2. Students review and discuss the role of the nonprofit organization in the community and the use of the 990 form.

     

Assessment 

Student participation in the review and group discussion, reflecting a better understanding of the organization.
